Municipality and FNB promote virtual run

The City of Maputo will host the second edition of the “FNB MAPUTO 10K” race, this year in a different and virtual format to adapt to the social distancing requirements imposed by the pandemic. Runners will be invited to complete a 10km course of their choice between 5am and 7pm and to monitor their race through the event tracking app.

“This event, part of the City of Maputo Day festivities, adds to the deepening of a sports and activity culture towards health and wellbeing in a more comprehensive way. This year’ s race will allow everyone from Rovuma to Maputo, regardless of geographical location, to take part while ensuring compliance with the social distance and safety rules,” said Prof. Dr. Edmundo Ribeiro, Education and Sports Councillor of Maputo Municipality.

With group sports practice suspended practically all over the world, virtual sports activities have been increasing internationally, bringing fun and innovative solutions for people to practice competitive sport even in times of pandemic. “After the success of the FNB Maputo 10K run last year, where we gave participants the opportunity to walk across the Maputo-Katembe bridge for the first time, we are very proud to bring this new concept to Mozambique and to our annual run – FNB Maputo 10K. In doing so, FNB is bringing life-enhancing digital innovation to the broader communities in which we operate whilst continuing to promote the practice of sport and a healthy lifestyle,” says Peter Blenkinsop, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of FNB Mozambique.

“We are thrilled with the launch of Mozambique’s first virtual run,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports.  “Participants from all walks of life will be able to come together (virtually) in a spirit of camaraderie, pride and celebration.”
