The 2021 Maputo Day celebrations were taken to the next level on Wednesday 10 November with thousands of runners (and walkers) lacing up their takkies in preparation for the second annual FNB Maputo 10K Virtual Run.
The beauty of the FNB Maputo 10K Virtual Run is that runners got to choose their own 10km route and run any time between 05:00 and 19:00. This meant that runners from all over Mozambique could be part of the action. The MAPUTO 10K RUN Tracking App enabled runners to monitor and record their race, before sharing their experience on social media.
“The Maputo 10k Virtual Run is a much-anticipated annual event in Mozambique that is becoming a firm part of the city calendar. It´s a fun activity that allows runners and walkers from all corners of Mozambique to unite (virtually) in a spirit of camaraderie, pride and celebration. Besides being an entertaining time, it also underlines the importance of regular exercise and healthy habits for the global health. This has gained new dimension through the pandemic. We encourage everyone to run or walk on a beautiful day at their own pace and time in their favourite spot,” says Peter Blenkinsop, Administrator Executive of FNB Moçambique.
For Eneas Comiche, President of Maputo City Council, “the 3rd edition of the FNB MAPUTO 10K Virtual Run marked one of the highest moments of the celebration of the 134th anniversary of this beautiful city of Acacias and Jacarandas, firstly because it attracted a large number of citizens of all ages and social backgrounds. Secondly, because it promoted interest in physical activity and the healthy and peaceful competition that is inherent in sport and thirdly, because this race draws the attention of the citizens to the benefits of physical activity in the prevention, reduction and containment of diseases, both of the physical and emotional forum. ”
“Mozambicans welcomed the 2021 FNB MAPUTO 10K Virtual Run with open arms and we are extremely proud to have helped organize this exciting event,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports. “Runners have missed the ‘race day’ jitters. Going by the online discussions, it was clear that the entrants were excited to have something to look forward to. We would like to thank each and every entrant for adding to the experience and for adhering to the legal Government Regulations for exercise.”
